FEBRUARY IS HEART MONTH: Take Steps to a Healthier Heart

Reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke by taking on these health habits that may just save your life.

1) Quit Smoking.

Smoking can actually double your chances of getting heart disease. If you don’t smoke, don’t start.

2) Monitor your blood pressure.

Have your blood pressure checked at every doctor’s visit. High blood pressure can make your heart work too hard and increase your risk for heart disease. Keep your numbers below 120/80 mm Hg.

3) Control your blood sugar.

Check your blood sugar level regularly and taking medicines as prescribed. Aim for a fasting blood glucose less than 100 mg/dL.

4) Control your blood sugar.

Check your blood sugar level regularly and taking medicines as prescribed. Aim for a fasting blood glucose less than 100 mg/dL.

5) Maintain a healthy weight.

Target a body mass index (BMI) of less than 25. Try to lose no more than 1 to 2 pounds a week.

6) Get active.

30 minutes a day, 5 times a week. You will also experience benefits even if you divide your time into 2 or 3 segments of 10 to 15 minutes per day.

7) Eat a heart heathy diet.

Eating a fiber rich diet is highly recommended. High-fiber foods that help lower cholesterol include whole-grain foods, fruits and vegetables. Opt for fish, lean poultry or meat. Limit sodium, saturated and trans fat, and added sugar.

8) Talk with your doctor.

Your primary care physician is your best resource. Together you can go over your risk factors and develop a personalized plan to help you get started on the right path to a healthy heart.
